Apple’s “California Streaming” event delivered on anticipated products: the iPhone 13 and Apple Watch Series 7. It also announced the launch of the iPad Mini. Notably, there was no mention of third-generation AirPods as fans had speculated.

iPhone 13

Like last year’s generation of iPhones, the iPhone 13 will come in four variants: the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, in five colors. In addition, this generation will come with a smaller notch display.

In addition, it will have an A15 chip, which Apple claims is “up to 50% faster than the leading competition.” It has also made notable upgrades to its cameras. The new 12MP primary camera with sensor-shift optical image stabilization and a bigger sensor can capture 47% more light than the iPhone 12.

Another exciting new feature is Cinematic Mode in video, which has portrait mode features, but for film. Battery life has also been improved by 1.5 hours on the Mini, and 2.5 hours on the larger iPhone 13.

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini retails from $799 and $699. The devices will also now start at 128GB of storage rather than 64GB.

The 13 Pro and Pro Max start at US$999 and $1,099, respectively. In addition, there is now a new 1TB storage option. They will be available for pre-order Friday, September 17, and will be available a week later, on September 24.

The Apple Watch Series 7

The Apple Watch Series 7 expects a notable redesign with a flat-edged finish that better resembles the slickness of the iPad and iPhone; the new lamination technique will bring the display forward more.

The Apple Watch Series 7 starts at $399 and will be available “later this fall.”

iPad Mini

The new 8.3-inch iPad Mini weighs in at just under 300g, and has P3 color gamut. It also has landscape stereo speakers, which is ideal for streaming media. The new iPad mini will also feature a USB-C port.

The new iPad mini retails from $499 for the 64GB Wi-Fi version and will be available in the US from September 24.

iPhone 13 pricing

According to CNET, the iPhone 13 will likely cost more than the iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 cost US$799, which is an increase of $100 from the iPhone 11. This increase in price is largely due to the addition of 5G. According to a report from DigiTimes, Apple may increase the cost for the iPhone 13 to offset the increased cost of chip production from TSMC.

Further iPhone 13 rumours

The iPhone 13 will be able to support improved 5G. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reportedly predicted in a note to investors that the iPhone 13 will have a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity feature. This will be available in select markets to provide connectivity without cellular coverage.

We may also expect the return of Touch ID, following four years of devices without a home button, which allowed Apple to build larger screens into its iPhones. If we do see the return of the home button, it is likely that it will be built into the digital display. The iPhone 13 will also launch with an improved MagSafe charger.

iOS15 – Face ID and Masks

The outbreak of coronavirus disease has led to an astronomical increase in individuals covering half of their faces with masks, rendering Face ID useless. It has been rumoured that iOS15 will have better facial recognition capabilities, and most importantly, the ability to recognise a masked face.

MacRumors’ predictions for “California Streaming”
iPhone 13

According to MacRumors, We can expect that, similar to last year’s generation of iPhones, the iPhone 13 will come in four variants: the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. This generation, however, will come with a notch-less display. We can also expect updates to the iPhone’s rear cameras, with its addition of sensor-shift optical image stabilisation across the whole line, as well as a better ultra-wide camera. In addition, it will have an A15 chip, an extremely fast processor, and most notably, a 120HZ pro-motion display featured on the iPad Pro. Though MacRumors admits this “is a stretch”, given the narrative of the promotional video, the new iPhone 13 may have an always-on display.

The Apple Watch Series 7

The Apple Watch Series 7 expects a notable redesign with a flat-edged finish that better resembles the slickness of the iPad and iPhone; the new lamination technique will bring the display forward more. According to Majin Bu, Apple has also started mass production of the new Series 7 bands, with sizes 21mm and 45mm, identical size to the previous model, and a faster S7 chip and quite possibly a bigger battery, given the extra size gained from this season’s redesign.

Third-generation AirPods

The third-generation AirPods will have a similar design to the AirPods Pro, but will likely not have active noise cancellation and transparency modes to keep retail costs down. MacRumors supposes that given the streaming narrative (“California Streaming”), perhaps a new set of AirPods specifically for streaming may be a possibility. Given that the event will be streamed, it is likely that this is all they are referring to.
