Ransomware attacks are on the rise. Ransomware has been around for more than a decade, but it received more attention in 2016 and 2017 with WannaCry, Locky, and other campaigns that hit many organizations hard. It then receded to largely background noise until the second half of 2020 and into the first half of 2021. In fact, FortiGuard Labs reports a ten fold increase in ransomware detections from July 2020 through June 2021. And it’s not just a rise in volume. The impacts that campaigns like EKANS, DearCry, DarkSide, and more have had on organizations and their operations have increased as well.
